Today I got to my theory class a little late, as did most of us. and my professor sat down and asked, “Why are you guys here? Where do you want to be after you get your masters, where should i look for you in 5 years? What’s your dream?”

And is started out as a fun little exercise as a few people answered and shared that they wanted to be teachers or open up their own studios or be a conductor. But then Dr. Olander slowly went around the room and asked every single person to share. And each person’s eyes lit up and they smiled and they spoke softly about what lead them to this school and what they wanted to do with their degree, what their interests are and how they wanted to use their degree to help others or spread music or make a difference.

Every person. 15+ people. It took nearly the whole class period. And Dr. Olander finished and said she was just curious and didn’t mean to take up the whole class talking about that, but she thought it was good to stop sometimes and remember why you’re here, where you’re going, who you are and what your dreams are.

I started crying in the middle of class bc it had been so long since i had stopped to remember why i love music and why i want a masters and how badly i want to use it to change people’s lives with music the way mine was.

So stop for a second. Don’t think about how much you’ve practiced this week, or your grades or your classes or scholarships or jobs or anything. Really stop. Stop and ask yourself,

Why am I here? Where do i want to be in 5 years? Why do I love this? What is my dream?

Remember who you are. Stop and dust your dreams off, and remember.

2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.

5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.

6] Number three is public restrooms.

7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:

1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.

2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.

5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.

6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side,put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .

b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.

Buttonholes scare a lot of people.

I believe there are four reasons for this. The first is that they usually go on a garment close to the end of the process of making it. You’ve worked very hard on your blouse, and now your buttonholes are going to be front, and center, and you don’t want to mess up a lot of work with bad buttonholes.

The second is that you usually have to trust your machine to make them properly. If you’re using a 1-step buttonhole, you have to have a machine that you know will give you a consistent buttonhole that’s where you told it to put it. You don’t have control over that part. Sometimes, you do everything right, and your machine still messes up. Even on a 4-step or manual zigzag buttonhole, some machines or fabrics will decide that making a giant mole on your fabric and then yanking it through your feed dogs and into your rotary hook (and possibly damaging your timing in the process) is significantly more fun than doing the stupid buttonhole properly.

They’re very difficult to undo. Removing tight satin stitching from an interfaced, 4-layer placket and having the placket go back to looking nice is a /pain/. There’s a reason why I save that job for helicopter moms when I’m doing children’s theater (well, three reasons: I need them to stop messing with the racks and screwing up my costumes because they don’t want their daughter in teal, I don’t want to undo them myself, and I’m not a good person). Assuming you don’t have apprentices to undo it for you, every time your machine messes up, you have an annoying and tedious process ahead of you.

And the fourth is that buttonholes are just complex things. You might have questions like where do I buttonhole, how big do I buttonhole, how wide do I buttonhole, how do I prepare for buttonhole, what shape do I buttonhole, and other questions that you’ll discover along the way. There’s rules for vertical and horizontal placement, how long and tall, orientation, and a few other things.

It’s a lot to talk about but let’s just get started.

Vertical button placement:

If you’re making a shirt or a front-buttoning dress/coat you want to place your buttons down the very center front of your garment.

If you’re making a skirt or dress that buttons down the back, you want to place your buttons down the very center back of your garment.

However, you also want your buttons to be a specific distance from the edge of your placket (the band in the front that the buttons/holes will be sewn on). This distance is based on diameter.

Buttons have both diameter and height, and they need to be considered as separate measurements. For example, both of these buttons are 1″ diameter buttons.

The left button has a height of about 3/8ths of an inch (not counting the shank, the little loop that the thread goes through). The black button on the right has a height of roughly 1/8th of an inch.

When you’re finding your button placement line, you need to keep your buttons ¾ths to 1x the diameter of the button. For these buttons, I’d want my button placement line between ¾ths of an inch and 1 inch away from the edge. If I switched them out for 1/2″ buttons, I would want the edge of my fabric to be between 3/8ths and ½ inch from my button placement line.

Since the button placement line is in the dead center of your garment, you have to do this alteration by removing or adding fabric, not by moving the button holes.

Due to the mechanics of how buttons work, if you move the button placement line away from the center and closer to the edge, it will make your garment larger. Instead, you’ll have to adjust your front band or placket on the inner edge. If your pattern has the placket as an applied piece (it was cut as a separate piece), you can change the size really easily by cutting the placket narrower or wider. If your placket is made of self (was cut as part of your front piece), you can usually get about 1/4″ of adjustment by folding your seam allowance smaller.

So, put your garment on, measure where your center is, and mark the center line on both the top and bottom plackets. Take it off and trace that line carefully, making sure your mark is visible, straight, and an even edge from the front of the garment. This line is going to be your foundation line, and you don’t want to lose it.

Horizontal button placement:

Now that you know how far away from the edge you need to put your buttons, let’s find out the right height.

It feels like it should be as simple as counting buttons and dividing by that number, but there’s a bit of a trick to it.

Do you have a blouse that always gaps open at the middle of your chest, or right at your waist? Do you have a blouse that is hard to button up all the way, because the neck button is too high or low?

Our bodies have some parts that more more than others, and we have some parts that are more sensitive than others. We’re also not shaped like tubes. If we want to wear button-up garments that are comfortable and look good, we need to keep that in mind. There’s three trouble spots:

Neck: Our necks don’t like when things are too tight. Our necks are also right next to our faces, and people who are talking to you will have your neck in your vision. We also use our necks to express emotion and to see the world around us, so our necks pretty much never stop moving.
Bust: People interested in lolita fashion who are based out of the United States are usually intimately aware that lolita garments aren’t really made for chesty girls. Since most lolita fashion flares out into a large skirt before we reach the hips, our busts are also usually the largest horizontal measurement on our torsos. We use our chests to breathe, so they’re constantly changing in size. Being able to see a stranger’s chest-skin is usually considered inappropriate (note to self, never call it chest-skin again, ew).
Waist: In all fashion, the waist is the foundation of all measurements. That’s why you tie a ribbon onto your waist before you start taking measurements. Garments that tuck in at the waist, or have additional detailing attached at the waist, need a firm waist measurement that’s not going to change. In addition, our waists move as much as our necks. We stand up, sit down, look around, digest food, walk, etc, and all of that changes the shape at our waists.

If you take a buttoned garment and pull hard at both side seams, the spaces that have a fastened button will stay together, and the rest of the placket will pull apart and create little gaps. A good button-up garment will have a button at the neck, bust, and waist, to keep those spaces from gapping and keep the foundational points from distorting.

Once you have your button placement line telling you where to put the buttons on the vertical, you need to mark your neck, bust, and waist lines. These marks should not move.

Now you just need to fit the rest of the buttons in around it. How many buttons you need is based on a few things. If your fabric is very drapey, you probably will need more. If your fabric is very thick, you will probably need fewer. If your buttons are very small, you will probably need more. For example, a wedding dress with back-buttons is usually made of a soft fabric and small buttons. Most wedding dresses with buttons have buttons that sit next to each other, with no space between. A winter coat is big and thick, with 1.5″ diameter buttons, and the fabric has very little drape, and usually has 3-5 buttons. (You also put a wedding dress on and take it off maybe three times ever, while you take your winter coat on and off every time you go inside our outside for the entirety of winter. If your winter coat had as many buttons as a wedding dress, you’d probably throw it away and get a coat with a zipper).

Spacing the buttons around your three foundational buttons can be tough. The chances are, your top set of buttons is not the same spacing as your bottom set of buttons. Because of this, I don’t actually bother with trying to find a least common multiple, because often I reach the conclusion that if I put one button every 2/927ths of an inch, they’ll have the same spacing all the way down. I eyeball it, then measure the distance between each button, and shift them around until the buttons on the top are even, and the buttons on the bottom are even, and the distance between the top buttons and the bottom buttons are pretty close to the same. Sometimes this involves removing or adding a button.

If you don’t like fiddling with it, they make a thing called a simflex gauge or an expanding sewing gauge, which will perfectly space your buttons for you.

If it really won’t look right, there’s a couple of things you can do:

You can keep the spacing between the waist and the bust even, and apply that spacing above the bust. If this pushes the top buttons upwards, keep them there. This will make the space between the neck button and the next button smaller than the space between the other buttons. This isn’t uncommon in suits.

If you’re a larger bust size and you didn’t resize your pattern to fit your cup size, you might have a button at your bust point that’s under a lot of tension (note: Victoria’s Secret is big on “go up a band size and down a cup size” but in button-up shirts, no matter HOW big you make the shirt, if the cup size is smaller than your bust size, your bust point will have more stress on it than the rest of the shirt. This isn’t always a bad or detrimental thing, but it’s part of fabric science. Once the chest measurement of the shirt exceeds your chest measurement, this largely stops mattering in everything except buttons)

if you made your shirt and you don’t feel like going into advanced pattern drafting and modifying and recutting and remaking your whole shirt, you don’t have to. You just need to do the snap trick.

Instead of putting one button at the bust point, space your buttons so that there are two straddling the fullest part of your bust (red horizontal lines). If you try your shirt on with two buttons there, you’ll see that it makes a nice obvious gap in-between them.

So you just need to invisibly sew in a normal snap (I’m a fan of the size 1/0 and 1 for this) right at your bust point. This divides the stress from your chest into three points, instead of one.

And if this happens to your shirts that do have the button right at the bust point, try sewing a couple of snaps into the spaces above and below that button. That’ll divide the stress on your shirt, and take it from being supported in one place (bust point button) into five (bust point button, two snaps, and the two buttons above and below the snaps).

Once you know your button spacing, take the right side of your shirt (unless you’re not following the convention for women’s blouses) and mark exactly where those buttons are going to go.

Speaking of snaps, if you want to finish your blouse fast, sew dummy buttons on the right side of your shirt, and sew in snaps underneath them. I work in theater and I’ve reached the conclusion that all costumes with buttons will eventually need to be replaced with snaps, so you might as well start it now. If anyone gets close enough to your chest to see that you’ve got snaps instead of real buttons, hit them with your parasol.
